Multiple Plate Woodcuts and Embossings
Multiple plate woodcuts are where part of the image is engraved into one wood block and another part (or parts) are engraved into additional wood blocks. The first wood block is inked and printed, allowed to dry, then the second wood block is inked in a different color, carefully lined up with the first print impression and printed.
Embossings are printed on a different paper than the usual woodcut printing paper, since the paper needs to be 100% cloth (not wood pulp) based, soaked for a period of time in a tub of water, blotted and then printed on the printmaking press with enough pressure to push the wet pliable paper into the grooves of the engraved wood block. It can provide all the rich detail of a woodcut, but in a much more subtle manner.
